Africa: Boxing, Judo And Table Tennis Round-up

African Olympians are participating in a wide range of sports in Sydney, among them boxing, judo and table tennis. The latest results as at September 18:

Boxing

In the Middleweight division, Abdelhani Kinzi of Algeria was beaten on points (19-9) by Adrian Diaconu of Romania, Peter Kariuki Ngumi of Kenya by Vugar Alekperov of Azerbaijan (12-3), and Ramadan Yasser Abdelghafar of Egypt by Jung-Bin Im of Korea (7-8).

In the Welterweight division, Ellis Chibuye of Zambia was beaten on points (18-4) by Roberto Guerra Rivera of Cuba.

In the Lightweight division, Gilbert Khunwane of Botswana was beaten by Cristian Bejarano Benitez of Mexico (17-5), but Raymond Narh of Ghana beat Victor Ramos of East Timor when the referee decided in the second round that Ramos was outclassed.

In the Featherweight division, Kassim Napa Adam of Uganda was beaten (12-3) by Tulkunbay Turgunov of Uzbekistan, and Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa beat Nouzeddine Medjehoud of Algeria on points (10-5). Yohanes Shiferaw Yohanes of Ethiopia was overcome by Francisco Bojado of Mexico when the referee deemed him outclassed in round 4.

In the Light Flyweight division, Sebusiso Keketsi of Lesotho went down to Un Chol Kim of North Korea when the referee stopped the contest in round 4.

Judo

In the Judo men's Lightweight division, Hassen Moussa of Tunisia lost to Giuseppe Maddaloni of Italy, who went through subsequent rounds to win gold in the division. Noureddine Yagoubi of Algeria beat Gil Offer of Israel, then lost against Michel Almeida of Portugal before going on to win against Kouami Sacha Denanyoh of Togo. He then lost against Tiago Camilo of Brazil. Haitham el Hossainy Awad of Egypt was beaten by Hector Lombart of Cuba.

In the men's Half-lightweight division, Kevin Ngapoula-Mbembo of Congo-Brazzaville lost to Kiyoshi Uematsu of Spain, and Tarek Ayad of Libya to Yukimasa Nakamura of Japan.

In the Judo women's lightweight division, Francoise Madeleine Nguele of Cameroon was beaten by Maria Pekli of Australia, and Rose Marie Kouaho of Cote d'Ivoire by Marisabelle Lomba of Belgium. In the Half-lightweight division, Naina Cecilia Ravaoarisoa of Madagascar lost to Pei-Chun Shih of Taiwan.

Table Tennis

Peter Akinlabi of Nigeria was beaten by Chul-Seung Lee of Korea, and by Slobodan Grunjic of Yugoslavia, but Segun Toriola of Nigeria beat Renier Sosa of Cuba. In doubles games, Toriola and teammate Nosiru Kazeen prevailed over an Indian team on September 18 after going down to a Dutch team on September 16.
