The Institution for Education for Democracy (IED), a non-governmental organization in Kenya, reports that according to its exit poll, President Mwai Kibaki won 47.4 percent of the votes while opposition leader Raila Odinga got 42.6 percent.

The exit poll took place in at 270 polling stations in 126 constituencies.

Kalonzo Musyoka, a former former minister, finished a distant third in the exit poll, receiving 10 percent.

In an interview with Reuters, an Odinga supporter rejected the exit poll results.

"Exit polls are something alien to Kenya," Salim Lone said. "People, specially in rural areas, are not keen to say how they have voted because they fear the power of the state."

You can see the exit poll results at IED's website.

Counting of the officials results was expected to begin Thursday night and continue through to Friday. Unofficial results are expected to start trickling in soon.
