Zimbabwe: Mugabe Stays Away From Regional Summit

11 April 2008

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe will not attend Saturday's extraordinary summit of the Southern African Development Community, called to discuss his country's election crisis.

This was first reported by ZBC News, Zimbabwe's government-controlled broadcaster. It quoted the permanent secretary in the Zimbabwe foreign ministry, Joey Bimha, as saying the summit was "unnecessary."

Three cabinet ministers would represent the country, ZBC News said. The meeting will be held in Zambia.
