Zimbabwe: Court Rejects Bid to Publish Polls Results

14 April 2008

Zimbabwe's High Court has refused to order the release of the results of the presidential election held 16 days ago.

News agencies report that Judge Tendai Uchena dismissed an application filed by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), which believes its leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, won the election.

Associated Press quoted the MDC's lawyer, Andrew Makoni as saying, "It's a very sad day in Zimbabwe... (The court) has given the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission a blank cheque. We don't know when the ZEC will be ready with results."
