Guinea: African Union Suspends Country Over Coup

The African Union (AU) has suspended Guinea from taking part in all AU activities until the country returns to civilian rule under the constitution.

The AU's Peace and Security Council said  in a statement issued from its headquarters in Addis Ababa that a meeting of the council held on Monday had reiterated its "firm condemnation" of the coup, which was "a flagrant violation of the Constitution of Guinea and of the relevant AU instruments."

The council demanded that Guinea "return to constitutional order," the statement said, and suspended the country under AU legislation dealing with unconstitutional changes of government.

The AU said it was coordinating its efforts to return Guinea rapidly to civilian rule with the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). It added that the chairman of the AU Commission, Jean Ping, was already in touch with with the perpetrators of the coup.

It is interesting to note that the AU is quick condemn the coup leaders in Guinea while looking the other way in the case of Zimbabwe' Mugabe. How about execising the same muscles wherever democracy is threatened in Africa...

The AU moves is highly welcome, but what others does not understand is that the suituation in Zimbabwe is quiet different from what is happening in CONAKRY. I swear that the west should be blame for the zimbabweans suffering in another hand the Mdc leadership is also a complice to this sufferings.Mugabe can be a dictator or whatever we are calling him but is far more better than Morgan, who is a really pupet and someone who will only be in for the west intrest in zimbabwe. Am an african i also sympatise with my fellow zimbabwean brothers and sisiter but Africa still needs heroes to fight for our intrest lets gives hand to them.

Yeah, Mugabe says "Zimbabwe is mine" and the foreigners are responsible. Mugabe says" only God can remove him from power" and the Westerners are responsible. Mugabe says" a ballot cannot remove him from power" and foreigners are responsible. Mugabe says" there is no cholera in Zimbabwe" even though hundreds have died and dozens are still dying, and the foreigners are responsible. The foreigners are responsible for Mugabe holding on to all the MAJOR MINISTIRIES and not wanting to share anything with the opposition. Yes, the foreigners are responsible for all the KILLINGS AND ABDUCTIONS taking place in Zimbabwe by ruling party activists.

Shame on us Africans. WE WILL REMAIN RETROGRESSING SO LONG AS WE CONTINUE BLAMING OTHERS FOR OUR SELF-MADE MISERY.

What actually are your interests as African other than respect for human rights, which is being denied vehemently by your so-called heroes- Mugabe and his likes?
