Dahabshiil has been shortlisted for Socially Responsible Bank of the Year at the upcoming 2013 African Banker Awards.

An independent panel of judges recommended a shortlist of candidates, with some of the biggest banks across the continent endorsed for various awards. Dahabshiil Bank International, a full service Islamic Bank licensed by the Republic of Djibouti, was noted for its vision for sustainable growth and commitment to the communities in which it operates.

Dahabshiil Group CEO, Abdirashid Duale, said: "We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Socially Responsible Bank of the Year award. It is testament to the core values of the business.

"Dahabshiil Bank was created as another evolutionary step in our 40 year relationship with our customers. In keeping with the tradition of Dahabshiil Group, we feel a keen sense of responsibility to contribute to the communities that we serve by improving access to banking for rural and low income urban populations and providing a vital link from the Horn of Africa to the international financial system."

Since its formation in 1970, Dahabshiil has supported a number of charitable and philanthropic causes across Africa. Over the past year, Dahabshiil has focussed its CSR programmes largely on infrastructure-driven projects, with an emphasis on building roads, schools and providing funding for healthcare. Meanwhile, Dahabshiil is making strong inroads into other financial areas essential for economic development, as its money transfer operation continues to provide essential lifeline services for communities in more remote regions of Africa.

Dahabshiil has been recognised for numerous awards in recent times, the latest being the 2013 Excellence for Enterprise at the Muslim News Awards in London. Dahabshiil in 2010 won the Mayor of Tower Hamlets Award for excellence in the community, and, in 2008, Mr Duale was named Top Manager of the Year by the International Association of Money Transfer Networks.

The African Banker Awards is a landmark event that brings together over 500 key industry players and top government officials from Africa and around the world to celebrate excellence and best practices in African banking and finance.

The winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on the 29th May during the annual African Development Bank (AfDB) meetings in Marrakech, Morocco. The AfDB, Africa's largest development institution, is the Official Patron for the Awards.
