Somalia: Abdulkadir Ahmed Mayow and Mohamed Isaq Barre, Somalia

press release

Abdulkadir Ahmed Mayow and Mohamed Isaq Barre were killed on Dec. 5, 2014 in a double bombing in a cafe in the town of Baidoa, Somalia. Mayow was a reporter for Somali Channel TV and Star FM, and Barre was a cameraman for Kalsan TV.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Al-Shabaab spokesperson Abdiaziz Abu Mus'ab said the militant group was responsible for the attack. In a statement broadcast on the group's Radio Andalus, he said the bombing was meant to target Ethiopians, officials and "spies". CPJ said Al-Shabaab often uses the latter term to refer to journalists.

The first explosion was detonated by a suicide bomber, and the second went off when a car filled with explosives was driven into the front of the restaurant. Fifteen victims were killed in the attack and at least three other journalists and several other civilians were injured.
