Kenya: Ca to Splurge Millions On Luxury Smartphones, Golf Kits in Lavish Spending

2 February 2023

Nairobi — The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) is set to spend millions of shillings to purchase luxurious smartphone brands.

CA in a tender advertisement is calling prospective suppliers to submit their tender documents to the Authority.

Procured items include Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, Nokia, iPhone, Google, Techno, Sony and Vivo brands.

The 35-items will see CA spend millions of shillings since a majority of the phones are high-end, meaning they come at a higher cost.

For instance, a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 512GB costs about Sh165,000 with CA procuring eight of them.

Similarly, iPhone 14 Pro Max 512 GB goes for Sh245,999 with CA having requested 20 of them.

This means that CA will be spending around Sh1.32 million on Galaxy S22 Ultra (512GB) as well as approximately Sh5 million on Iphone 14 Pro Max (512 GB).

It is also procuring for men (11 pieces) and women (10 pieces) golf kits. Others include rolling travel cver men and women FlexTech Crossover Stand Bag.

This comes at a time when President William Ruto's administration seeks to cut government spending to reduce loan pressure.

In his inaugural speech at Parliament, Ruto ordered the National Treasury to cut Sh300 billion from the current budget.

He also reiterated plans to reduce borrowing appetite estimated at around Sh900 billion every financial year.

"The current budget is forcing us to borrow Sh900 billion. We must reduce this kind of borrowing because we have accumulated a huge debt that is overburdening Kenyans," Ruto said earlier.

CA says the tender should be delivered
