South African Navy kicks off activities for World Hydrography Day celebrations in Gqeberha

The SA Navy has commenced on build-up activities to the World Hydrography Day (WHD) Celebrations in Gqeberha that will be taking place over 21 - 25 June 2023. The build-up activities include performances by the internationally acclaimed SA Navy Band in various locations, including the Uitenhage Congregational Church, City Hall and Bloemendal Moravian Church.

The annual WHD is celebrated internationally on 21 June and emphasizes the importance of hydrography, particularly in protecting marine reserves and promoting safe navigation in international waters and ports.

Hydrography, the science of measuring and describing the physical features of bodies of water, is essential for safe navigation, marine resource management, and environmental conservation. The WHD Celebrations in Gqeberha will showcase the latest advances in hydrographic technologies, highlight the importance of accurate and up-to-date nautical charts, and emphasize the growing need for skilled professionals in this field.

The WHD Celebrations will feature a range of activities, including informative presentations, interactive workshops, and hands-on demonstrations that cater to diverse interests. The WHD Celebrations will be executed over a number of days and include the following:

21 June 2023. SA Navy Media Briefing onboard the SAS PROTEA and Courtesy Call with the Executive Mayor.

22 June 2023. Chief of the SA Navy handing over of Legacy Project to Kama Primary School in New Brighton.

23 June 2023. C Navy's second Legacy Project that involves the cleaning up of the Mendi Memorial Site.

24 June 2023. Music Gala Concert at Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton.

25 June 2023. Wreath Laying Ceremony and Right of Entry Parade in Mendi Street, New Brighton.

Parallel to the above events, ships will be open to the public as from 23 - 25 June 2023 (09:00 -14:00) and will include the various SA Navy platforms.

Additionally, SA Navy exhibitions and recruitment will be on display at the Port of Port Elizabeth for the duration of the celebrations. The exhibitions will include Maritime Reaction Squadron (MRS), Diving Tank, SA Navy Armaments display and Hydrography displays.
