Kenya: Kasarani MP Karauri Wades Into Kirima Land Eviction, Vows to Appeal Ruling

25 October 2023

Nairobi — Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri now says he will be appealing the eviction order issued by the Environment and Land Court (ELC) against hundreds of families who have been living illegally on the land owned by the late tycoon Gerishon Kirima.

While questioning how Kirima got the property during a meeting with the affected settlers, Karauri faulted the court's decision.

"We are going to appeal the notice given by court that declared the late Gerishon Kirima as the rightful owners of the land!" Karauri stated.

"They are saying the land belongs to kirima who is kirima?"He questioned adding that it was unfair for the family to take over possession of the disputed land which will leave close to 1000 families homeless.

According to him, the affected settlers who were sold the disputed parcel of land deserve the right to know how the late Kirima acquired the land.

"We want to know how kirima got the land!If the land was not acquired legally the court judgment must be reversed," he stated.

MP Karauri added that the affected settlers are ready to negotiate with Kirima's family to resolve the dispute.

"We are not negotiating from a point of weakness this battle we gonna fight. All the concerned groups are ready to negotiate with kirima family," he said.

Njiru ward Member of the County Assembly Carrington Heho assured residents not to panic stating that's as leaders they are looking into the matter.

"There is no first class or second class citizen. The land matter must be negotiated through arbitration," he added.

The Environment and Land Court gave a ruling Tuesday that ordered the affected settlers to vacate or be evicted from the 1,000 acres of land by December 31st.

In it's ruling the court said land owned by the late politician Gerishon Kirima who passed on in December 2010 is property of Kirima Estate administrators.
