South Africa: Suspect Nabbed for Possession of Illegal Firearms

press release

The Hawks' National Priority Violent Crime team together with Crime Intelligence and SAPS Muizenberg members have on 28 February 2024, arrested Andrew Theologo (54), on a warrant of arrest for possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of a firearm without a license.

It is reported that during June 2021, there was an alleged explosion that took place in Capricorn, Muizenberg. When police arrived, they encountered the accused manufacturing illegal drugs at the premises. A search was further conducted and several firearms and ammunition were found that were registered in the name of the accused. It was however established that two of the firearms' serial numbers were tampered with. Further investigation revealed that serial numbers were not registered on the Enchantment Firearm Registration System (EFRS). The matter was then referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for decision and the decision was taken to prosecute Theologo. The Hawks applied for a warrant of arrest and it was issued.

He had appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court for the drug related matter on 17 January 2024.

Theologo appeared at the Muizenberg Magistrates Court on 29 February 2024 for firearm related charges and the matter is postponed to 04 March 2024 for bail information. He is remanded in custody.
