Destruction, Violence Plague Kenyan Border Town

The northeastern town of Garissa woke up to scenes of destruction and chaos after an apparent orgy of overnight violence.

The situation triggered even more skirmishes at dawn after hundreds of furious local residents vented their anger by attacking a contingent of military personnel on patrol with stones and other crude missiles, prompting the soldiers to open fire in what they termed as self defence. One woman was reportedly killed during in the melee while scores sustained bullet wounds.
