Is Space for Media Freedom Shrinking in Uganda?
The Uganda Communications Commission has been accused by Human Rights Watch and Uganda media stakeholders of harassing the media. Five media houses could have their licenses revoked after their live coverage of the arrest of Bobi Wine who is a presidential candidate in the election against President Yoweri Museveni in 2021.

The Uganda Communications Commission, UCC, has said five broadcasters breached the minimum broadcasting standards through their live coverage of the arrest of MP Robert Kyagulanyi, well known as singer Bobi Wine, in April and May 2019. The regulator said it contained misrepresentation of information, views, facts and events, in a manner that was likely to mislead or cause alarm to the public. The UCC has asked them to show cause why their licenses shouldn't be revoked.

There was an international outcry when a video of soldiers beating up a Reuters photojournalist who was covering a demonstration supporting detained Bobi Wine. In 2016 a press freedom index report by the Human Rights Network for Journalists named the police force as the top violator of press freedom in the country for the fourth consecutive year.
