Govt Readies Basic Income Grant for South Africa's Unemployed

As the nation's economy faces the COVID-19 outbreak, the government has announced its intention to introduce a Basic Income Grant for unemployed non-grant recipients between the ages of 18 and 59. This comes as a total of 4 424 720 applications for Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant were approved and amid rolling power cuts from energy utility Eskom, a rescue plan for embattled airliner South African Airways and decreased mining output.
