Europeans Clamp Down on Angolan Business Empires

Business empires grown by Angolans during the rule of former President José Eduardo dos Santos are facing crackdowns in Europe, reports the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). Swiss authorities have frozen nearly $900 million belonging to an Angolan business executive with ties to successive presidential regimes, says Will Fitzgibbon, while Isabel dos Santos, Dos Santos's daughter, has lost joint control of a leading Portuguese company in the internet, TV, fixed and mobile telephony market, writes Douglas Dalby. It was revealed in July that the European Banking Authority would probe revelations contained in Luanda Leaks, an investigation led by the ICIJ, into how billionaire businesswoman Dos Santos made her fortune.
