South African Govt Readies Phase 2 Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout

South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced that the second phase of the country's vaccination rollout will begin on May 17, 2021. Mkhize added that the country secured a combined 51 million jabs in agreements that have been signed with various drug makers, aimed at 42 million people. According to Mkhize, 31 million jabs are from Johnson & Johnson, while 20 million will come from Pfizer.

The country is also expecting about 1.2 million vaccines from COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX). As of April 9, 2021, 1,554,975 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country of which 53,173 proved fatal and 1,480,632 resulted in the recovery. Vaccinations to date total 283,629.
