Challenges Facing Nigeria Ahead of 2023 Elections

Nigerians are facing petrol shortages and chaos at banks over a new currency swap ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections on February 25, 2023.

Despite the Supreme Court's interim order restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria from going ahead with the enforcement of its February 10 deadline for the use of the old naira note, many Nigerians have besieged commercial banks and ATM points nationwide, amid scarcity of the old and new naira notes.

In December 2022, the CBN introduced the new notes amid efforts to fight corruption, terrorism, counterfeiting and related crimes. However, Nigerians have had a hard time getting the new notes and frustrations have led to protests in parts of the country.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu has reassured Nigerians that the February 25, 2023 poll will not be postponed. Nigerians are set to elect a new president and will also  elect governors and local councils, two weeks after the presidential elections.
