Jill Biden Concludes Visit to Namibia and Kenya

Dr Jill Biden ended her five-day trip to two African countries on Sunday February 26, 2023 with a close-up look at the record-breaking drought that is affecting east Africa. After touring an outreach centre operated by World Vision in Kajiado County near Kenya's border with Tanzania, she appealed to other nations to join with the United States in providing humanitarian support. People and livestock are starving, she told reporters travelling with her. On Friday February 24, she was welcomed to Nairobi by Kenyan First Lady Rachel Ruto.

Along with the focus on food insecurity that has ravaged parts of the continent, she emphasised the importance of women's empowerment on both stops. "I've always believed that supporting women and youth across the world is critical to our common future, with education, health, and empowerment at the heart of it all," the U.S. First Lady said in a tweet as she ended a trip that began in Namibia.

The trip was her sixth to the continent, her first to Namibia and her sixth time in Kenya. She was met on arrival in Windhoek by First Lady Monica Geingos, who hosted a luncheon at State House, along with President Hage Geingob.

President Joe Biden announced during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in December 2022 that he would be travelling to Africa in 2023.

"Here in the Horn of Africa, a prolonged drought has left communities with devastating consequences in its wake. As our world has become more connected, we have seen how hunger and violence, poverty and natural disasters, aren’t contained by borders." - @FLOTUS during a visit to Kajiado County on her final stop in Kenya.
