Niger Junta Pays Price For Coup With Ecowas Suspension

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) suspended Niger Republic from its decision-making structures, after the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup.

The leaders proposed lifting sanctions if Bazoum was released, but the junta rejected this, agreeing only to potentially shorten the transition period without specifying the duration.

At a previous meeting, the leaders at the ECOWAS summit vowed to tackle terrorism with a standby force review and regional collaboration. Discussions centered on gradually easing sanctions on the Niger Republic through engaging its military junta for a transition roadmap, toward restoring constitutional order.
