Iconic Freedom-Fighting Photographer Magubane Laid to Rest

Legendary photographer Dr. Peter Magubane was laid to rest in Johannesburg amidst a week of tributes, with mourners praising his courageous fight against apartheid through his camera lens.

His funeral was attended by dignitaries, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, and focused on the political impact of his work. Speakers emphasized the importance of Magubane's storytelling through photography, noting that the police feared his camera more than stones or petrol bombs.

President Ramaphosa highlighted the need for Magubane's story to be taught in schools, honoring his legacy. The funeral also revealed personal anecdotes, portraying Magubane as protective, funny, and a lover of music and comedy.

Award-winning Magubane rose to prominence through his powerful, evocative images documenting pivotal moments in South Africa's struggle against apartheid - most notably the 1976 Soweto Uprising in which black youths protested against being taught in the Afrikaans language. The struggle stalwart became Nelson Mandela's official photographer following his release from prison in the early 1990s.

The veteran photographer was buried in the Fourways Memorial Park. Magubane died on January 1, 2024.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Zizi Kodwa, has expressed his sadness at the passing of distinguished photographer and anti-apartheid activist Dr Peter Magubane.
