Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi Laid To Rest

Former Tanzanian president Ali Hassan Mwinyi has been laid to rest at Mangapwani village in Zanzibar's Unguja Highland. Mwinyi passed away at the age of 98 on February 29, 2024, after battling lung cancer.

The state funeral, presided over by President Samia Suluhu at Amaan Stadium, praised Mwinyi for his crucial role in transitioning Tanzania to multi-party politics and steering away from socialist Ujamaa policies. Known as "the father of democracy," Mwinyi's legacy includes advocating for human rights, embracing diverse viewpoints, and fostering media independence.

The nation observed seven days of mourning, flying the national flag at half-mast to honor Mwinyi's contributions to Tanzanian development and regional integration.
