Workers' Day Rallies Call for Better Conditions and a Living Wage

Across Africa, International Workers' Day on May 1st is marked by calls for better working conditions, a living wage, and increased job creation.

South Africa, with one of the world's highest unemployment rates, faces a working class struggling under the weight of a rising cost of living. Housing, transportation, food, and electricity prices have all experienced significant increases.

In Namibia, workers grapple with poor living conditions, a high cost of living, and inflation eroding their disposable income. Kenyan doctors have taken action, demanding promised salary increases, better working conditions, and increased doctor recruitment.

Nigeria's government approved a salary increase for civil servants. However, separate negotiations are ongoing between the government and labor unions regarding the impact of petrol subsidy removal on Nigerians.
