Insecurity Hinders Rescue Efforts for Trapped Miners in Nigeria

At least 50 miners have been trapped underground after a mining pit collapsed in Galkogo, in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

One person has been confirmed dead and seven others were rescued with severe injuries. Ahmed Yumu, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in Niger State, has said that insecurity and difficult terrain are impeding the rescue efforts of miners who are trapped.

In 2022, the government of Niger State implemented a ban on mining activities in the districts of Shiroro, Munya, and Rafi as a response to security concerns.
