South Africa Records Two Deaths From Mpox as More Cases Emerge

South Africa has now recorded six laboratory-confirmed cases and two deaths. Minister of Health Joe Phaahla said that all the cases are men aged between 30 and 39, without travel histories to countries currently experiencing an outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency over an outbreak of Mpox in 2022. In 2022, South Africa recorded five positive cases of Mpox in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Gauteng. No cases were reported in 2023. There is no registered treatment for Mpox in South Africa.

Since early May 2022, cases of mpox have been reported from countries where the disease is not endemic, and continue to be reported in several endemic countries.
