Can Policies Help Africa Halve Road Deaths by 2030?

To halve road accidents by 2030, African countries must focus on education and effective policies, according to Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Road Safety.

Todt said that it is important to integrate road safety into broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urges increased efforts to enhance safety measures. He urged the importance of making roads safer for vulnerable users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, through policies that promote walking, cycling, and public transport.

The Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 from the World Health Organization (WHO) on road safety, found that Africa remains the region the most affected by this tragedy. According to the WHO report, the number of victims on African roads continues to grow with a mortality rate of 19 out of 100,000 people.
