Dam Collapse Kills Scores In Sudan

Dozens of villages, including schools, health centers, and other public facilities, have been swept away following the collapse of a major dam north of Port Sudan. The incident which the authorities said was caused by heavy rains and flooding left more than 130 people dead. Search and rescue teams have been deployed to help those "trapped in the mountains where they fled for safety".

Meanwhile, the U.S.-brokered peace talks held in Geneva to end the 16-month conflict have failed to halt the fighting but succeeded in gaining greater humanitarian access to millions of people deprived of food, medicine, and other essential relief.

"We hope that this will be a source of momentum for much bigger steps and progress down the road," U.S. Sudan envoy Tom Perriello said after the discussions.
