Leadership Shake-Up in Tigray Party as 16 Leaders Expelled

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremichael, has reported expelling 16 members and senior leaders, including Getachew Reda, the party's deputy chairperson.

The party confirmed that its Central Committee met on September 15, 2024, leading to three key decisions. One of these decisions declared that the expelled leaders no longer had any political authority to represent the TPLF.

According to the party, the expelled individuals abused their temporary administrative powers within the party to engage in illicit activities, such as embezzling substantial funds, with the intent of destabilizing the party and creating divisions among the people of the region.

In a move that underscores the growing rift within the party, the Congress replaced Deputy Chairperson Reda, with Amanuel Assefa. Amanuel, formerly head of the Tigray region's justice bureau and chief of the Interim Administration President's office, also served as the chief secretariat of the Congress.
