Sudan Displacement Crisis Worsens As Fighting, Hunger Escalate

The International Organization for Migration has said that the scale of the violence in Sudan, and the corresponding humanitarian crisis, continue to escalate as increasing numbers of people flee the fighting, hunger and sexual violence, which is "threatening regional instability".

Earlier the UN raised alarm over the sharp increase in violence near Khartoum which claimed the lives of more than 120 people. Reports indicate that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched major attacks across the eastern parts of the regional state of Al Jazirah, "indiscriminately shooting at civilians and committing sexual violence against women and girls".

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has expressed shock at the "appalling" human rights violations "of the kind witnessed in Darfur last year" - such as sexual violence and mass killings.
