Funding For African Union Mission in Somalia Under Scrutiny

The U.S. has opposed a UN proposal on funding the African Union's new "stabilization and support" mission in Somalia, sparking significant concern about the future of the force. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said Somalia is not a suitable testing ground for the proposed hybrid funding model.

The U.S. decision comes ahead of a scheduled May 15 vote by the UN Security Council on the new joint financing mechanism for the force.
