President Suluhu Wins 98% of Vote in Disputed Tanzania Election
Samia Suluhu Hassan has been declared Tanzania's president, securing another term amidst days of unrest. The electoral commission reported that Suluhu came out on top with 98% of the vote, nearly sweeping the 32 million ballots cast.
Observers have expressed concern over the lack of transparency and widespread violence that have reportedly caused hundreds of deaths and injuries. Several rights groups condemned government repression ahead of the election, including Amnesty International, which cited enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings. The government rejected the claims, saying the election would be free and fair.
Suluhu was sworn in as Tanzania's first female president following the death of President John Magufuli in 2021.
