Cameroon in Shock After Suspected Separatist Attack

Cameroonians have been left in shock following a brutal separatist attack on a remote village in the country's Northwest region, which left more than a dozen people dead or injured. Residents described harrowing scenes of entire families being slain and homes razed to the ground - an escalation that has brought into focus the brutality of the wider conflict plaguing the Anglophone regions.

Estimates from the International Crisis Group suggest that approximately 6,500 people have been killed and over a million displaced since 2017. The crisis began when teachers and lawyers from Cameroon's two English-speaking regions went on strike to protest the imposition of French in Anglophone schools and courts. The Yaoundé-based government was accused of responding with a hardline approach, causing peaceful protests to deteriorate into violent confrontation.

Observers say the turmoil provided fertile ground for separatist factions to grow. An increasing number of English speakers are now demanding full independence and the creation of a sovereign nation.
