U.S. Airstrikes Target Militants in Somalia's Puntland Region
The U.S. military has conducted airstrikes targeting Islamic State fighters in the Puntland region of northeastern Somalia. In a statement, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the March 16 strike was part of a joint operation with the Federal Government of Somalia intended "to degrade ISIS capabilities" in the Horn of Africa.
Puntland authorities have been engaged in a sustained military campaign against Islamic State militants since late 2024, successfully reclaiming much of the territory previously held by the group in the Cal Miskaad mountains.
