Ghana Plans 1,200MW Gas-Fired Power Plant to Avert Energy Crisis

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major expansion of Ghana's energy capacity, centered on the construction of a new 1,200-megawatt gas-fired power plant to avert a possible energy crisis. Mahama said increased investment in the sector has become urgent following recent power supply interruptions.

"When we took office in 2025, national consumption stood at approximately 3,500 megawatts. Today, peak demand has reached 4,300 megawatts, driven by rising investment and growth," he said, stressing that the goal is not only to meet domestic demand but to create a surplus for export to generate vital foreign exchange.
