Uganda’s Mixed Record in Prosecuting Powerful Officials

Although Uganda boasts one of the most extensive anti-corruption legal frameworks in the region, the government's willingness and ability to prosecute politically connected figures successfully has varied dramatically depending on the individual involved, the Nile Post reports.

The government has commissioned an investigation into outgoing Speaker Anita Among over allegations of illicit enrichment and money laundering. The probe has already resulted in raids on Among's office and luxury residences, coming amid heightened public scrutiny over-expenditure by public officials.

The Nile Post reports that while there are precedents for successful high-level prosecutions, Uganda's political history presents uneven results.
