Ugandan Court Clears Way for Besigye, Co-Accused's Treason Trial

Uganda's High Court has dismissed an application by opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale seeking to have their treason charges dropped over alleged violations of their constitutional rights.

Justice Emmanuel Baguma ruled that the application lacked credible evidence, was an abuse of court process and appeared intended to delay the trial. The court rejected claims that the pair had been unlawfully abducted from Kenya, detained incommunicado and denied a fair trial, finding they had failed to substantiate the allegations.

The ruling clears the way for the treason trial of Besigye, Lutale and Uganda People's Defence Forces Captain Denis Oola to begin on July 13, 2026.
