The Sudanese government led by the National Congress Party and the southern Sudan ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement agreed today to demilitarize the contested area of Abyei where Ethiopian peacekeepers will be deployed.

The agreement to withdraw the northern and southern troops was signed today Monday in the Ethiopian capital where the parties held directs negotiations brokered by the head of the African Union’s High-Level Implementation Panel on Sudan, Thabo Mbeki.
