Gender Representation Issues Rage On in Kenyan Cabinet

Female Members of Parliament and gender rights lobby groups are standing their ground, promising to reject any efforts to amend the constitution, in a bid to iron out the one-third gender requirement in the composition of all elective and appointive public bodies. While the cabinet argued that article 81(b) was technically impossible to implement in its current form, the women rights organizations say the impending move to amend the constitution was malicious and aimed at entrenching the marginalization of women. And as Francis Gachuri reports, the gender rights groups are insisting on a proposal that if effected, would compel 73 constituencies to exclusively elect a woman as their representative in the national assembly.
