Kenya Govt Threatens to Sack Striking Teachers

The Cabinet has today endorsed the 13.5 billion shillings staggered pay deal for teachers and issued a take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum. A statement from the presidential press service said the government would seek to absorb 100,000 trained but unemployed teachers and also recall from retirement those under 65 should the teachers persist with the strike. The Cabinet also directed that the current school term be extended by three weeks to cover for lost time.
