As the Internet becomes widely available to educational organizations, online education has exploded in growth and popularity with many educational leaders and policymakers now having access to more data than ever before. Big Data provides an opportunity to educational Institutions to use their IT resources strategically to improve educational quality and guide students to higher rates of completion, and to improve student persistence and outcome. Governments and educational organizations in many African countries are still in their nascent stages of conceptualizing data collection and big data analytics. However, on the global stage, big data is already changing the education landscape and increasing opportunities for those nations who can leverage big data to make data driven decisions.

In this edition of EdTech Mondays we ask, how can educational leaders and policymakers in Africa develop the organizational capacity to use the data they collect to improve outcomes for students, educators and the communities?

The Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning launched EdTech Mondays as a platform to facilitate critical conversations on the use of technology for teaching and learning by bringing together key stakeholders, including policymakers, EdTech entrepreneurs, development partners, teachers, and parents. EdTech Mondays help to disseminate 'what works' in harnessing technology to improve education policy and practice.
