27 March 2007

Cape Town — President Thabo Mbeki will represent South Africa at this week's extraordinary high-level summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is expected to discuss issues including the crisis in Zimbabwe.

Mbeki's office has announced that he has postponed a scheduled appearance in Parliament in Cape Town on Thursday to travel to Dar es Salaam for the meeting.

The summit will be chaired by President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, the current chair of the SADC organ on politics, defence and security. Kikwete  held talks with President Robert Mugabe in Harare two weeks ago. Mugabe is also expected to attend this week's summit, the Zimbabwe government-owned newspaper, The Herald, reported today.

The SADC's member states include Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
