Togo: Thousands Protest Africa Cup Ban

6 February 2010

Thousands of people have demonstrated in Lome over Togo's exclusion from the next two tournaments of the African Cup of Nations.

News reports said between 25,000 and 50,000 people took part in the demonstration on Saturday. Agence France-Press said protesters called for the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, of Cameroon, to resign.

The CAF imposed the ban on Togo after it withdrew from the tournament last month following a gun attack on the team bus in the northern Angolan enclave of Cabinda. Two team officials and a bus driver died in the attack.

The Togo government has vowed to take legal action against the CAF.
