Mozambique - Joaquim Chissano Highlights Fight Against Corruption in Angola

Luanda — The former president of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, Saturday in Maputo, highlighted the fight against corruption in Angola and Mozambique, as part of actions to improve the business environment and the welfare of the population.

In Angola, figures show that, as part of the process of fighting corruption and recovering assets, the Angolan government has so far recovered USD 5.3 billion, partly in cash and in assets.

The country has seized over USD12.9 billion, whereas USD 6.1 billion have been recovered abroad and the remainder in Angola.

The Angolan state also recovered 14 buildings in Luanda, six houses, shops, offices, land and over 500 vehicles in the wrongful possession of former public office holders, amongst other assets.

The former Mozambican Head of State, who spoke to ANGOP on the sidelines of a lunch meeting between delegations of MPLA and FRELIMO in the scope of the 47 years of Mozambican Independence, stressed that one should update and continue the fight to correct evils that affect the African societies, particularly Angolan and Mozambican.

"I think that we have exceeded our expectations. There is a need to update and continue the fight to correct evils that affect our societies, such as the fight against corruption that is underway in Angola and Mozambique. This is a matter of concern to us, which is why we are all called upon to fight", he said.

For Joaquim Chissano, there is the need for the continuous fight idealized and materialized by Eduardo Mondlane, Agostinho Neto and other African nationalists, for the welfare of the communities.

Joaquim Chissano expressed satisfaction for the knowledge that the new generation has about the historical leaders. "They speak of Eduardo Mondlane and Agostinho Neto as if they had lived with them", strengthened the statesman, adding that it is a sign that the youth assumed the fight, lacking only some work to structure this interest and knowledge presented.

Joaquim Alberto Chissano, 82-year old, led the Mozambique destiny from 1986 to 2005.
