South African Envoys 'Snub' Zimbabwean Opposition Party

A delegation consisting of former parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbete, senior African National Congress member Ngoako Ramatlhodi and former minister of safety and security Sydney Mufamadi from South Africa failed to attend a meeting with Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance, upsetting the opposition's leaders. The special envoys were sent by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa following the suppression of anti-corruption protests and detention of activists and politicians from opposition parties in Zimbabwe. This follows statements made by former Botswana leader Ian Khama who slammed Africa's regional and continental blocs for failing to resolve the Zimbabwean crisis, and the African Union Commission which hinted at Zimbabwean authorities capitalising on the Covid-19 pandemic to suppress the rights of citizens.
