Buhari's Plans for Next Three Years of Governing Nigeria
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the national and the international community that his administration will use the remaining years in office to improve access to quality education, healthcare and the enhancement of productivity, while listing nine priority areas that will receive urgent attention. The Buhari administration has seen many challenges, including lengthy months of waiting for a cabinet to be announced. The leader has had health challenges and spent many months in the UK receiving treatment for a condition that remains undisclosed. Coupled with this are the highs and lows of the nation's economy and attempts to diversify from Nigeria's reliance on petroleum. There are also challenges in government institutions, where corruption is rife and is impacting on development. Education and healthcare are a concern and there has been infighting in the ruling All Progressives Congress, forcing the president to make some tough decisions. All this as the challenge of militant attacks by Boko Haram and the rise of armed gangs threaten security in the country. Despite the challenges, among the highlights are that Nigeria is the leading economy on the African continent and has made headway with exposing corruption. The country is also looking at other avenues of income, including agriculture to boost their economy, particularly in light of Covid-19 and the impact on the oil price worldwide. It is also looking at refining its own oil and trying to curb the importation of certain foods, including rice, to save on costs.
