WAFCON 2022 - We're Down to the Semi-Finals!

After a four year hiatus, the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, kicked off on July 2. After several nail-biting matches in the group stages, the tournament now has four semi final teams. Nigeria, the current title holders, will face host country Morocco in the semi-finals on Monday July 18, 2022. On the same night, South Africa will play Zambia. All four teams have also sealed places in next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

In matches between losing teams from the quarter-finals on July 17, 2022, Cameroon defeated Botswana, while Senegal beat Tunisia. That means that Cameroon and Senegal now qualify for the inter-confederation playoffs for the Women's World Cup. FIFA's decision to expand the tournament from 24 to 32 teams for the 2023 edition of the Women's World Cup resulted in more places for Africa. The competition will be played from 18 to 23 February in New Zealand at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton and Auckland's North Harbour Stadium.

WAFCON is arguably the biggest women's sports event in Africa. This year it was extended to include 12 teams. Hosts Morocco were joined by Cameroon, Nigeria (who have won the tournament the most times), South Africa, Tunisia, Senegal, Zambia, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Togo, Uganda and Burundi.
