Arrests Climb as Suspects in 2021 Unrest Face South African Court

Investigative police unit, the Hawks, have arrested a further three suspects for the instigation of the civil unrest in July 2021 that caused mass destruction in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. This brings to total number of suspects detained to 25, as of August 15, 2022.

Violence erupted in the two provinces when former president Jacob Zuma began serving a 15-month jail sentence for contempt of court over failing to appear at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture. Looters vandalised shopping malls, other retail outlets, businesses, factories and destroyed infrastructure.

More arrests are imminent.
