South Africa's Zuma Still in Russia, Prisons to Decide His Fate

Former president Jacob Zuma has extended his trip to Moscow as the Department of Correctional Services decides whether he should return to prison. News24 is reporting that it understands from two sources who have knowledge of Zuma's trip that he was meant to return on Tuesday July 18, 2023, but that he had extended the trip.

He is seeking medical treatment in the Russian capital, although the details of his illness are unknown.

This follows a Constitutional Court ruling that he should return to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Earlier in 2023 the Supreme Court of Appeal affirmed the Pretoria High Court's December 2021 verdict, which overturned a decision to release Zuma on medical parole by former Correctional Services Commissioner Arthur Fraser.

Zuma was initially imprisoned in July 2021 for refusing to obey a court order to appear before a commission of inquiry into the government and private sector corruption which flourished during his presidency. He was admitted to an outside hospital for medical observation.

Zuma's jailing triggered widespread violence in two of South Africa's provinces. Looters vandalised shopping malls, other retail outlets, businesses, factories and infrastructure with over 1,000 people arrested as a result.
