Inquiry After Miners Die In South Africa

An inquiry into the fatal incident at South Africa's Impala Platinum (Implats) Mine at Rustenburg in the North West province, in which 11 miners died and 75 were injured on November 27, 2023 will be undertaken by the minerals and energy department. A 12th miner died later in hospital, according to a statement by Implats. enCA reports that a 13th miner died in hospital on Sunday December 3.

A cage transporting the 86 miners plunged to the bottom of the shaft during a mechanical fault, at the end of their shift.

"It is quite a sad incident. It dented our efforts to move towards Zero Harm in the industry. In 2022, we reduced the number of fatalities to 49 [and] that was the lowest number. We will continue investing and improving health and safety in the mines. People must go to work and come back alive," Minerals Minister Gwede Mantashe said.
