Nigerian Gunmen Demand Ransom for 287 Abducted School Children

Gunmen who abducted at least 287 schoolchildren in Nigeria on March 7th are demanding a ransom of $621,848 and threatened to kill all of the students if their demands are not met. This kidnapping, the first mass abduction in the country since 2021, took place in the town of Kuriga, Kaduna State.

The government has urged the country's security forces to secure the release of the hostages "as a matter of urgency" without paying any ransom. This incident comes nearly a decade after the infamous Chibok schoolgirls' abduction by Boko Haram in 2014.
