South African Speaker's Home Raided Amid Corruption Probe

Gauteng Hawks, acting on behalf of the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Investigative Directorate (ID), raided the Johannesburg home of National Assembly Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula as part of a corruption inquiry related to her tenure as defence minister.

She served as defence minister between 2012 and 2021.

There are allegations that she received millions in bribes from a former military contractor when she was Minister of Defence. Mapisa-Nqakula has denied the allegations.

Meanwhile, during the parliamentary session, President Cyril Ramaphosa faced questions regarding the Speaker's absence and allegations, with the Democratic Alliance calling attention to broken promises on lifestyle audits and allegations of corruption within the government. Opposition Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen grabbed the politicking opportunity in the Q&A session to link the raid to President Cyril Ramaphosa's much-promised yet uncompleted executive lifestyle audits, reports Daily Maverick.
